Some people are gifted at choosing a domain name, like those guys that came up with google, godaddy or facebook.
If you’re like the rest of us, it takes some brainstorming.
There is one Golden Rule to selecting a domain name.
Simplicity
Keep it as easy as 1 2 3
Easy to:
1. Say
2. Spell
3. Remember
You could come up with the most clever name of all time, but if no one can pronounce it, spell it, or remember it, then what good is it?
Now that is the golden rule, but here is the prized secret.
Choose a name without numbers or words that sound like numbers.
Using the number 4 in place of the word “for” means you would want to purchase 3 different domain names with the 3 different variations of 4, for and four. It’s not necessary for you to own all of these, but realize your audience will make mistakes or forget which variation you are using if you are not using them all.
You’ll want to stay away from letters that sound like words too. U/You or EZ/Easy
If you’re really serious about dominating the usage of your domain name you will also want to own the different suffixes of .com .net .org .info and etc. It’s not necessary to own all of these, and you could get away with owning just the .com. But once you start making a name for yourself and your domain name, you’ll want to keep the copycat competition away from your brand.
You don’t have to rush and make a quick pick, think it over for a day or two. If you aren’t sure that your domain name abides by the law above, say it out loud, tell it to a friend and make sure they can write it down properly
It’s ok to use something simple like your name, or a variation of it such as StephanieDeneke.com or JoinStephanieDeneke or WorkWithStephanieDeneke, or WhoIsStephanieDeneke nobody can spell or say my last name and I hate to spell it out because people still spell it wrong and that’s why this blog is SayHelloStephanie. It’s creative. It also reminds me of when I was a little kid and my mom would encourage me to talk to others and tell me to “Say Hello, Stephanie”. But I have seen other marketers be even more creative and come up with really catchy sites such as a Grandmother that brands herself as “The Million Dollar Grandma”. So be creative, brainstorm, think outside the box and make it Golden!
