Don’t Talk To Your Warm Market!

Not that you want to anyway. If you’re reading this I’m sure you’re interested in online marketing and none of that warm market stuff.

Which is AWESOME!

In my last post I shared 3 marketing methods that are on fire and actually work (Click Here to read those) I also said that myself and my team are training other marketers on how to implement two of them.

But there’s one method we won’t teach to other marketers.

How to talk to your warm market.

And not because we don’t think it works. We’ve got it down to a science and it’s making our team spread out like wildfire.

So why wouldn’t we share it?

Because we don’t want you to talk to your warm market.

Neither do other online marketers. That’s why they bad mouth it all the time.

Hmmmmm. Isn’t that interesting. What is the reasoning behind that?

Because WE want to reach your warm market through the internet before they even know you’re involved in Network Marketing.

That’s right. There’s the almighty secret behind the trash talk of offline marketing.

Offline marketing has a proven track record of working. How do you think it was done before the internet?

But everything evolves, and those huge teams that were created in the 80’s are still marketing like it’s the 80’s. Well, 1982 called and it wants it’s network marketing methods back.

As marketers we have to adapt to the changes that new developments throw at us. The internet has changed the game. Now that old methods are failing the general view of Network Marketing from those on the outside is that Network Marketing as a whole doesn’t work. Well that’s just ridiculous or else there wouldn’t be hundreds of people joining the industry everyday.

Here’s the deal. I know that offline marketing works,,, not by using the methods of the past,,, but with today’s new and improved methods.

That’s why the team of marketers I’m working with is impenetrable. We got our market on lockdown so that those “nay sayers” on the internet don’t steal our potential prospects out from under our nose.

You cannot “prejudge” and “prequalify” your warm market. You will never know if someone is interested unless you ask.  They aren’t going to bring their needs to your attention if they don’t know you’re involved in Network Marketing. If you’re one of those that feels too shy or embarrassed to talk to your friends and family about your opportunity then chances are they feel the same way and aren’t going to come to you for answers, they are going to get online and do their research. And who are they going to find? Those that are the leading authority, not their neighbor, not their buddy, not their brother or sister, and not you.

If you still don’t want to talk to your warm market, that’s cool. Cuz eventually someone in my team will. So don’t get mad when your sister or your best friend from high school calls you up to tell you they joined up in Network Marketing. In fact, don’t even be surprised.

Internet Killed The MLM Star

Offline methods aren’t “dead”, they just don’t apply in the way that new comers to the industry expect them to. Therefore they are easily convinced that offline methods don’t work.

Here’s 3 Offline Methods that have worked in the past (and still do for some people) and I’m going to break each one down into 3 parts.

1. How it worked back in the day before the internet.
2. The way people expect it to work online,,, and why it doesn’t.
3. The proper way to use this method today.

1. Make A List.

Back In The Day ~ Relationships with the people around us were a lot closer and people communicated verbally and on a more intimate level and more frequently. When someone recommended something people listened to each other. When marketers made their list it consisted of people they talked to on a regular basis, had strong connections with and it wouldn’t be a phone call out of the blue. It was a sincere invitation to see a presentation with the recipient’s best interests in mind.

The Myth ~ Instead of a phone call we can just send an email to everyone in my contact list! And then I’ll start copying and pasting the presentation link on their Facebook wall! Yeah!

Negative. The concept of the list was based off of maximizing existing relationships. When brought into the online world the part of about “relationships” gets distorted. I have people adding me on Facebook from high school all the time. People I barely knew back then. I’m sure you do too. If one of them randomly posted a presentation link on your wall, or emailed you with a sales pitch,,, would you care? Neither would they.

The Here & Now ~ This can work in the online world. (And still in the offline as well) You just have to repair and rebuild those connections. The most POWERFUL way to handle that is to come right out and acknowledge that you haven’t talked in awhile, or maybe hardly ever, but that their name stuck out in your mind because of…. Fill in the blank as to what quality they have that made you think of them,,, they own a business, were valedictorian, the basketball star, the quarterback, a Realtor, a whatever,,,,

2. The 3 Foot Rule

Back In The Day ~ People used to wander around in shopping malls, prospect the girl at the gas station counter, their waitress, the hairdresser, the dentest. And actually, people still do that, and it works, but only for the right kind of person. It worked the best in the past because people enjoyed small talk and connecting.

The Myth ~ There’s 500mil people on Facebook, I’m going to talk to them alllll!!!!!

Now we can randomly add people on Facebook, jump into chatrooms and forums and meet new people. Our ability to chat and meet new people is only limited to how fast we can type and how many abbreviations we know. Unfortunately up to 93% of our communication effectiveness comes from nonverbal cues. Hmmmmm, hard to judge enthusiasm and genuine interest through IM’s. You could be wasting your time on someone that is just pulling your chain and, well,,, wasting your time.

Here And Now ~ You can make this work online. Eventually you’re going to have to take it offline and get them on the phone and see if they are just jerking you around. But then again, if they give you their phone number then they probably aren’t really jerking you around anymore and have just prequalified themselves by giving you personal contact info. Or then if you are a true professional and they are at least a semi-serious marketer already then you can get their phone number pretty easily to call them up.

3. Good Ol’ Fashioned Advertising

Back In The Day ~ People used to plaster car windows with flyers. I’ve yet to hear of that one working. It probably takes 10,000 flyers to get 1 person to show up. There’s also drop cards, post-it notes, newspaper ads, radio commercials. The list goes on.

The Myth ~ Join every Facebook group and plaster the wall with opportunity links,,, PLUS my own wall,,, PLUS all of my friend’s walls.

Chances are if you do this 1 of 2 things is going to happen. You will have no Facebook friends left or you will get kicked off of Facebook. People HATE this. Don’t be a jerk.

Here And Now ~ The possibilities are actually endless. Especially if you have a budget to spend on advertising. Facebook Pay Per Click can be as little as .01 per click. Discover SEO and you can be generating leads for free.

Traffic Generation is NOT Lead Generation

Driving traffic to your website, such as your blog, Facebook fanpage, capture page, sandwich page,,, etc is USELESS if you don’t understand the art and science of sales and marketing. You have to know what to do with the traffic you generate.

Most people coming into Network Marketing have been employees all their lives, and most likely not within the marketing and advertising field. Even with years in MLM, many never really learn marketing.

They may get the Networking part down within their warm market or their social networking site market, but never really master how to connect with new people and attract new prospects.

Lead Generation and Traffic Generation are often easily confused.

Traffic is the people that come to your website. You may get a lot of “impressions” or “visits” to your website. But if you aren’t capturing their information then they aren’t leads.

There is no use in learning how to generate traffic if you also do not learn how to convert that traffic into leads.

Over the next several posts I’m going to teach you the theories behind Online Marketing and Marketing in general that isn’t being taught by your upline. Why aren’t they teaching it to you? 1. Because they think it’s so basic that everyone should already know it,,, or 2. They don’t even know it themselves.

There are somethings in life where it isn’t necessary to understand the principles in order for it to work for you,,, such as a TV remote, I don’t have to know HOW it works, just how to operate it. But I didn’t build the TV remote either.

In online marketing it’s important to understand the theories and principles behind it because you are the one ultimately responsible for your success and the one that is in charge of what you are doing.

To begin with I’m going to explain the 3 forms of advertising (yes, admit it,,, marketing is interchangeable with advertising)

Interruption Advertising ~ You did not ask to see it, but there it is… it’s annoying. Most people tune it out. This type of advertising only works for companies that are very brand recognizable like Coca Cola or McDonalds.

This is the type of advertising most people are familiar with and marketers try to imitate it on Twitter and Facebook and it DOES NOT WORK for them because they aren’t Ronald McDonald and NO ONE CARES. (Hint: if you’re doing a sales pitch all over Facebook as your marketing method,,, knock it off, you’re hurting yourself more than helping.)

Direct Response Advertising ~ This is the immediate response from the person viewing the ad. Either they hate it and they leave, or they like what you have to say, they stay and they opt in. A lead capture page needs to have a call to action and solicit a response from the viewer to put in their name and email (and hopefully phone number). It has to contain these elements:

1. The Headline: Hook your readers by the eyes and suck them in and interest them. If you suck at this part then the rest doesn’t really matter.
2. The Bribe: This is the offer that you are making to get them to opt in. It’s what they get in exchange for giving up their information. It has to be valuable enough for them to give up their info.
Great sales copy will have both a carrot in front of their eyes and a fear attached to it. Something good for them to get, and a fear of loss if they don’t get it now.
3. Call To Action: Actually tell people where to click and exactly what to do.

There are more mechanics to it than that and an expert on the details (even right down to which colors work the best on a capture page) is Jonathan Budd, he seems to know some crazy little tricks that create a higher conversion rate. Here’s a couple secrets I’ll share:
1. Red Heading works the best (no one has any idea why, it just does)
2. Have your opt in box to the right of your video (the video should be of YOU)
3. Draw and arrow pointing directly to where they should put their info.
And yes, the video on the page NEEDS to be of you. You can’t use someone else’s system and their video and hope that it converts into leads. Opt in pages that have a personalized video have a conversion rate that is 400% higher.

Permission Based Advertising ~ Once someone opts in on your capture page you now have their permission to continue sending them information. Instead of interrupting them on their Facebook page or by Tweeting at them all day you can now send them a marketing message campaign. This is the opposite of cold calling, they have raised their hand and asked for info. Lead generation is only as good as the trust you build with your leads once they are on your list.

Those are the 3 forms of marketing and advertising. Notice I mentioned nothing about Attraction Marketing in that list. Attraction Marketing is a combination of Direct Response and Permission Based. Magnetic Sponsoring is the best teaching tool for Attraction Marketing.

Position yourself so the interested people find you and come to you for help.

I feel the need to address something,,,

Anything you say that starts with

“But I,,,,”

“Well you see,,,”

“My situation is unique/different,,,”

“I don’t have the time,,,”

“There’s too much going on,,,”

Is like nails on a chalkboard to me.  Because it’s an excuse.

Growing up my brother and I used to tell our mom that we didn’t have excuses, they were reasons.  Well, we were a couple of liars,,, they were excuses, and so are yours.

If you want a thing bad enough,,, you will get it.

I have a 3 year old daughter and she already knows the rules. There are no “yeahbutts” in this house.

I’m going to share something with you that motivates me daily and gets my heart pumping because I see it and read it everyday. I got this on a call with Larry Beacham (The Stonecold Millionaire)

If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it,

I’m also going to share something else with you.  When I started in Network Marketing I was unemployed, living in my friend’s spare bedroom with my daughter sharing a twin size bed.

So if a single, broke, homeless, unemployed mother can do this, then so can you. PERIOD.

3 MLM Contradictions Explained

Why are marketers saying that offline methods don’t work? But then say that you can’t build a huge business without offline methods.

Why are marketers saying that funded proposals don’t work but they are selling their own affiliate products on their website?

Top marketers also say that it takes no more than a simple invitation to a business presentation to get sign ups, yet they are doing their OWN presentations.

Well, the truth of it all is,,, all of this is right.

Let’s tackle all three of these contradictions.

1. Offline Methods Don’t Work - There are a lot of offline methods that don’t work for certain people. If you HATE to randomly approach people while shopping then that method isn’t going to work for you.  But don’t tell me it doesn’t work, how did they do it before the internet? And there’s still marketers that work strictly offline and call online marketing a fad and say online marketing doesn’t work.

Which is also true, online marketing methods don’t work either,,, unless you like doing them.  If you don’t like the way you are marketing then you aren’t going to be putting your heart into and you will suck at it.  Therefore both sides of this argument are right… when it comes to their personal experiences.

And the further truth is that those making 5 to 6 figures a month in this industry did not do it strictly online. Here’s why: Once you gain success through the internet people in your personal life will notice. They will ask about your business and some of them will join. Also, once you quit your stupid job when people ask what you do, you will tell them, they will ask questions, and some of them will join.

That’s just 2 examples of how offline marketing will work even when you refuse to market offline.

2. Funded Proposals Don’t Work – Well, that’s true and false at the same time too. Funded proposals require a lot of knowledge. Mostly technical know how, and if you are creating your own product you have to know way more than 95% of marketers. Plus, information becomes dated so fast that what you are creating today may not even be valuable or useful in 6 months.

Funded proposals are most effective for those who have the resources to outsource their work. There are ways to get them to work on a smaller scale by utilizing and selling the products of others as an affiliate. (Click here to understand how that works.)

3. Being An Inviter Doesn’t Work – Well that’s a bunch of crap, I know it works. I’ve seen it work. It works for people who’s personality it fits. I don’t believe that it works to build a large organization, but I’m waiting for someone to prove me wrong.

It is my belief that the person holding the marker makes the most.

What does that mean?

The one giving the presentations is the one that is making the most money.

If you want to build a large organization, have massive success and loads of money flowing in then you need to learn how to give presentations.

It takes more than one exposure to your business to get a quality rep signed up. At least one of those exposures should be coming from you in the form of a presentation. The other exposures can come in the form of a live 3rd party presentation, or a sizzle call, or a 3 way call.

But if you can’t give a simple presentation you aren’t portraying yourself as a leader and the odds are against you for getting sign ups.

The one holding the marker makes the most money.

There are 3 contradictions of MLM/Network Marketing cleared up for you. Both sides of each argument are true, but in each case, one side is making more money than the other.

So even if you don’t want to believe me, just look at what the other money makers are doing.

What Are You Going To Do About MLM Retention?

Notice I said what are YOU going to do about retention. I did not say what is your sponsor going to do about retention.

You can’t sit around waiting on them. If you want their help you gotta raise your hand and ask for it. And,,, unfortunately,,, in most cases even if you call them 36 times, email them 23 times, facebook them 18 times, threaten to tell their mom, and you stop by their house and bang on the door for an hour,,, they still won’t help you.

(note: I am in NO WAY referring to who I work with in this industry, he rocks as a fearless leader and we’ve got a killer team,,, I’m remembering others that I found along the way and some of the stories I’ve collected from other marketers)

Back to the question at hand.

What are you doing about retention?

First, if you aren’t familiar with the dirty word attrition, let me enlighten you. Attrition is when people run fleeing your MLM with their hands in the air in exasperation. It’s when they go looking for what you can’t offer them. Which could be anything from leadership, to training or perhaps they just realized they don’t like the company and it’s product as much as they thought.

Whatever the reason is, attrition is what you ultimately want to avoid. The opposite of attrition is retention. This is a happy Utopian MLM where everyone is prospering and growing with massive success and they aren’t leaving for greener pasture.

People join MLM’s to make money, and if they aren’t making money within the first 1-3 months,,, they leave. You need to be able to teach them how to make money right away.

This industry isn’t a get rich quick scheme,,, but if people don’t see some sort of positive results from working with you they will find someplace else to go.

Even traditional businesses know: It’s more expensive to get new customers than it is to keep the one’s you’ve got. (If you’ve ever had the opportunity to look at a company’s financial statement you would see that the expenses for advertising are way higher than they are for customer loyalty discounts.)

So if you’re biting your nails right about now scared about how you’re going to coach your team into having massive success in their first month of joining you can just relax.

I’m gonna give you something simple you can do that will help you. It’s not some complicated business building strategy or anything like that either. Because face it, what works for one person isn’t going to work for everybody, we’re all different.

So that’s the first thing to learn to retain your downline. Recognize and respect that they are individuals and will do things differently from you.

Here’s the second thing I’m going to teach you for retention: connect.

If you sign someone up into your company and then you do nothing to connect with them after that they will feel like they were just a “sale”. 3 months later when they’re gone and you haven’t introduced them to anyone else in your team,,, don’t be sitting there scratching your head wondering what happened. That one is all your fault.

So stay in their face after they join. Be proactive. Introduce them to others in the team. Crossways, up, down, diagonal. Build bonds and relationships that they won’t want to break. These relationships will also give support and encouragement.

As a Network Marketer I hope you understand the benefits of leveraging the efforts of others. By introducing people to each other within the team you are leveraging everyone’s efforts to create a bond and cohesion within the team that will lead to everyone’s success.

In order for retention there needs to be a personal touch. Online marketing can sometimes get impersonal, it needs a bit of the offline intimacy that builds strong bonds.

The third thing I’m going to share with you is so simple that if you can’t manage this then you’ve got problems I can’t help you with. Facebook and Skype can both help you out with this…..

Ready?

Remember people’s birthdays, anniversaries or other special events in their lives and send them a message and recognize it. People like to feel special, noticed and remembered.

If you think that’s too overly simple to work I want to you think about a time when you got a birthday card from someone you would never had expected to remember you. That was a cool feeling wasn’t it?

You can give all the tools in the Network Marketing industry away for free to your downline, you can throw affiliate products at them day and night. You can host training webinars and broadcast them to everyone,,, but if you don’t do these 3 simple things, then none of it matters. Because each person is different, each person needs to tweak things to fit their personality. And you aren’t going to be able to know what they need unless you connect with them and learn about them. And sometimes you might not be the one with the answer. There may be someone else in your team that will connect better and be better equipped for some individuals.

So here’s the three steps again:

1. Recognize and Respect people’s individuality
2. Make connections.
3. Make them feel important.

Network Marketing Inspires 9 Year Old Entrepreneur To Enroll 154 People Into Numis Network And Make $200,540

As a parent I want my daughter to follow her dreams as she grows. I hope she follows her dreams like my friend Robbie Johnson’s 9 year old son.  Robbie and I work together in the Numis Network team Team Takover and have both been inspired by the leadership of Dave Wood, but I believe Dave inspired Robbie’s 9 year old son more than any of the rest of us on the team.  Here is a reprint of Robbie’s blog entry on how his son is an inspired Network Marketing Entrepreneur.

This is a story my son wrote on a state test. He wrote it in his own words. I have not edited it in any way. He told me this story on his way to school. I was inspired by it and wanted to share it with everyone:

The Little Money Maker

My name is Jake Willis I am nine years old. I come from a very poor family. One day I was walking home from school. every day I pass the local dump and I always look through the garbage for old toys or games. But that day there were no toys or games but there was a old chest with a old rusty key in a keyhole. So I went to the counter and I asked if I could keep the chest and the man said I could keep the chest.

So I dragged the old chest four blocks to my old house. When I got home I said ‘hi’ to my Mom. Then I took the chest outside to my Dad I asked my Dad for some oil. When he gave me the oil I put some on the rusty key. Then I turned the key. When it unlocked the chest I opened it. And inside the chest were old collectors gold and silver coins And a P.B.R invitation. Even though I didn’t know what a P.B.R I went up to my Dad and asked him if we could go but he said ‘NO’. The next morning I snuck out of the house. Witch seemed imposable with all the squeaky floorboards.

Once I got out of the house I took a bus to the Seattle center because that is were the P.B.R was. Once I got there I went to the meeting room. In the meeting room there was a white board and a man talking to everyone so I asked him if this was the P.B.R and he said yes. After the P.B.R I sold two of the coins and I got for $500.00. I also got a sign up sheet that I hade to have my parents fill out so I could join Numis Net work.

When I got home my parents were so mad that I snuck out of the house that there faces were bright red. I was sent to my room for four hours. But the next day I asked my parent if I could join Numis Network. After two hours of thinking my parents decided that I could join Numis Network under my Dads name. After three years I built a team of 154 people and I had made over $200,540. And now me and my parents live in a very nice home in Hawaii. And when I am 18 I make $80,000 a month and I am also none worldwide for my training webinars on how to be successful in Numis Network.

This all came about because I recently had a Private Business Reception at my house with my good friend David Wood. My son the whole week was excited about him coming to our house. I had no idea the effect that it would have on him. It inspired him to write this story. Which leads me to ask are you inspired by what network marketing can do? Are you dreaming big like my 9 year old son? I am.

OK, as a mom this pulled on my emotions and I got a little teary eyed.
