How To Talk To People About Network Marketing

Not everyone is the same, therefore you can’t talk to them all the same way.

Analyzing personality types can get overly complicated, and once you learn all 16 (well, depending on which list of types you go by) how are you supposed to apply it to Network Marketing?

Let’s make it more simple just be looking at why people join Network Marketing but breaking it down into 4 categories of what motivates people.

1. Helping Hands ~ There’s a huge reward in helping others. Helping others brings good feelings to the giver and the receiver of the good deeds. Network Marketing is an opportunity to use your gifts to help others. This in turn boosts self esteem for making others’ lives better. In turn making the whole world a better place.

2. Funtastic! ~ Truly enjoying what you do for ‘work’ is something that is felt by less than 13% of the entire population. Most people hate what they do for a job and want to get out of it and have fun. Surprising to some, Network Marketing is a place to release your artistic and creative energy. It’s a venue to express your individuality and have fun doing it!

3. Shake Your Money Maker ~ Money is a HUGE motivator. In fact, money can actually be a means to obtain the first two. In order to have a hobby that is fun you need money to purchase equipment or to get to where you have your fun. To donate to bigger charities and organizations you need the funds. To do anything in life you need money. It’s just the way it works. I would go so far to say that this is the main reason people get into Network Marketing. Not necessarily to have hoards of money, but because of what money can do as a tool.

4. The Vision Thing ~ Without It You’ll Never Be A World Class Organization. This is actually the title of an article co written by Ken Blanchard. Aligning yourself with a clear and compelling vision of the future puts you in a position to focus your energy towards a defined target. You see the bigger picture. You are part of something that is bigger than yourself and you are leaving your impression, your mark, on something that is awesome. You strive to have an accomplishment or overcome a challenge and be able to say “I did that!”

Reading these quick descriptions you should be able to pick out which of these types you are. (If you’ve followed me much or read some of my other tabs I’m sure you can tell which one I am too.) But most importantly you now know what motivates the different types of people that get into Network Marketing.

With this information you can now appeal to those types of people. It’s very difficult to appeal to everyone all at once. You end up looking like you have none of your own desires or motivations because you are all over the place trying to please everyone all at once.

I’m going to break it down for the Network Marketing beginner:

1. Recognize which category you are in for motivation. Don’t be afraid to show it. Because there are others out there that are motivated by the same category.

2. Talking with these types of people will be easier for you because you can relate to them. You will be able to build a connection with them faster. You will naturally attract people that are more like you.

3. You will occasionally draw people to you that are motivated by the other categories. This is your opportunity to learn. Everytime you come in contact with someone new your first goal is to get to know them. Get on the phone with them as soon as possible. Ask questions. Find out why they were first interested in Network Marketing. The answer is going to give you clues as to what motivates them. Once you know what motivates someone, that’s what you talk about more.

Example: If you are motivated by having fun and winning vacations in the company and are speaking to someone motivated by helping others you need to be able to speak more about team building and empowering others and paying it forward by coaching people and helping them to develop as entrepreneurs and discover their own dreams.

It takes practice to be able to do this easily. And that’s ok. Don’t worry about doing it right every time you talk to someone. Not everyone is going to connect with you, not everyone is even going to want to join your opportunity (I know, crazy, but some people just don’t think your company is the best). Some will, some won’t, so what.

The more practice you have the better you will get. Don’t worry about doing it right, worry about doing it more often.

For the more seasoned and advanced marketer that can pick out what motivates, and knows how to appeal to each motivating factor, the tricky part for you is being able to invoke emotions from an audience. To be able to throughout a presentation shift motivators and emphasize on those that are getting people to lean forward in their seats.

The biggest challenge? Appealing to all four via an internet presentation on a webinar where there is no way to judge reactions (unless you say something to make them angry and then you will either see people dropping out, or nasty little messages showing up in the question box).

No matter where you are in your learning process, understanding what motivates people will be a vital asset to your Network Marketing knowledge. If you don’t care what interests other people, then they aren’t going to care what you have to say.

Go out, connect with people, learn about them, build relationships and become a successful Network Marketer.

(I’ve learned these secrets about personality types from a few different people, but Cedrick Harris nails it the best. Hear his original audio presentation of the 4 main personality types by clicking here. His breakdown into the 4 elements, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water is so cool)

Live With Passion ~ Live With Purpose

What Are You Doing In Network Marketing?

Really. What are you DOING here?

I know HOW you got here.

The Law Of Attraction was in effect and brought you to this industry. (Whether you understand it or believe it,,, and if you don’t believe it then it’s probably because some of the pieces were missing when you heard about it)

In some way you brought this industry into your life. It wouldn’t leave you alone, you kept seeing it everywhere. The more you thought about it the more it was. You hated your job, you hated your boss (or at least you didn’t like working their hours and working for their dream).

You made a choice to do something about it and you went looking for something different. You chose to be different. You chose to stand out from everything and everyone you know and be unique.

From the day you joined Network Marketing you have been on the biggest personal development journey of your life. And I’ll be upfront with you, every self doubt and insecurity you’ve ever had in your life is going to come back to you. And they will need to be confronted.

That is why you need to have a dream so big that it’s colossal and crowds out all self doubt. You need a “WHY” that gives you incentive to build the courage to get over whatever insecurity or doubt that is holding you back. And you have to really really really really want it and be passionate about it. You have to have more desires than excuses.

Back to the question then “What are you doing in Network Marketing?”

Are you having success? Are you doing the tasks that will bring you success? Are you hiding behind training? Are you talking to new people on a daily basis? Are you struggling with any of these?

Take an assessment and remember why you got into Network Marketing.

1. Picture clearly what you wanted to gain from working for yourself. Get it very clear in your mind. Visualize where you are standing when you have attained what you wanted to gain. (Yes, do it for real, I’m not just making up some happy stuff to tell you to do) Use all of your senses and truly be there.

Now write it all down. And write down a date by when it’s going to happen.

2. Next think of what you need to do in order to reach that goal. Think of the tasks. What kind of obstacles are going to slow you down or prevent you from reaching your desired outcome? Is there something that you are not sure of how to do? Write these things down too.

3. Finally, write out what you will need to learn in order to complete the work that needs to be done to get you to your goal and to your final outcome. Which skills do you already have? And which ones do you need to develop?

There’s no way to foresee every little thing that you will need to learn, or all of which skills you need to develop. But now you have a good idea of where to focus your time that you devote to training.

Now you can take action that will produce results and build you in confidence and as a leader.

Back to the question: What are you DOING in Network Marketing?

This should be a 2 part answer (read aloud unless you’re in a library, shhhhh, they won’t like that)

1. “I take action and perform income producing tasks that introduce people to my business.” (80% of your time spent working in your business)

2. “I evaluate my skills that need improvement and I take action in learning, developing and practicing those skills” (20% of your time spent working in your business)

That is what you are DOING. (Note the emphasis on DOING, nothing results from thinking, trying, should-ing, or would-ing)

Always remember WHY you joined this industry and focus on what you are DOING to reach that outcome. It’s a process, we all pay our dues, but by focusing on our dream, we enjoy that process. You have chosen to separate yourself from the majority of the population and that should bring you joy.

Note: Recognizing what obstacles you may face and knowing what tasks and knowledge are needed to overcome those obstacles is not always easily recognized. Anyone who wants to succeed in any field needs to seek out mentors to guide and encourage them. Seek and find a mentor.

Network Marketing: Being A Student Of The Industry, And Of Life

I have been a part time “professional student” in college for the past 13 years. As my parents jokingly say. I’ve never found anything that I wanted to do or study with any level of interest. So I would just take a few classes here and there. The only thing that ever interested me was human behavior. And I’ve found that there are some weird people out there.

It wasn’t until I found the Network Marketing industry that I really felt passionate about learning and growing.

I absorbed everything I could on the subject. I’ve read so many books, watched so many videos, listened to so many audios in such a short time period that it’s been information overload at times.

Isn’t it funny how when something sets us on fire that we become real students and take in every piece of information like our every breath depended on it? I’m sure I’m not the only one that has ever had this experience.

In the past year I have read at least 50 books, attended countless trainings and webinars, downloaded and read dozens of ebooks, watched educational videos, and here is a brief list of what I think were the Top 10:

David Schwartz’s The Magic Of Thinking Big

Donald Trump’s Think Like A Champion

Bill Bartmann’s Setting & Achieving Goals Video Series

Dale Carnegie’s How To Win Friends And Influence People

Dr. Seuss’s OH! The Places You’ll Go (I have a 3 year old, but this book struck me as the one that should be EVERY person’s first personal development book)

Seth Godin’s Tribes

Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad

Mike Dillard’s Magnetic Sponsoring

Anthony Robbins’s Unleash The Power Within

And of course, no list is complete without….

Napoleon Hill’s Think And Grow Rich

There’s many more I could add to this list. A couple of these I read years ago and just recently read them again.

So let me ask you… What are you passionate about? Are you passionate about your business? Are you continuing to be a student and grow and become more valuable to your team, prospects, even to be a bigger asset as a friend or to your family.

What are you learning today?

1. You will have NO credibility

2. You will generate a mentality in your downline that says “Well they didn’t do it why should I?”

Get out and DO things to expand and grow as a person. The more you do so the easier it becomes to do other things.

Don’t live life in a closet. If you believe in something, and are truly passionate about doing it, put it on a billboard in your front yard and tell the world. Don’t give people the reason to say “Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

Live With Passion ~ Live With Purpose

10 Powerful Core Commitments made by real leaders in MLM and Network Marketing.

“A leader is someone that can get other people to do things that wouldn’t have otherwise gotten done if the leader hadn’t been there.”

The following is from a training given to our team by my personal mentor and sponsor David Wood. It is so powerful that I was compelled to share it. (View the full training here, however it is specific to my team’s company)

These commitments can be applied to any company within Network Marketing. In fact, we carried these commitments over to our new company team from our previous network marketing company that had shut down its compensation plan.

This is for those who desire to be leaders in network marketing.

**************************************
The Ten Core Commitments

1. Get Started Right – In your first 24 hours,
plug into your team training. And jump in with a major burst of energy.
Contact people that you know personally and that you know well,
(keep the list small,,, don’t call your neighbor’s cousin’s friend,,,
unless that’s also your best friend), to tell them you have started
your business. (Use your team training to learn how to do this without being overbearing)

Start your business right, and get your new people to do the same.
Plug people into your teams existing system for training.

***If you feel embarrassed to tell those closest to you about your
business then you are either with the wrong company,
or network marketing may not be for you.***

2. Three Great Invitations A Day – Expose at least 3 people to your
business on a daily basis using 3rd party tools. Always be connecting.
If you have just started, treat people right and invite them to see the
message from someone other than YOU.

3. Form A Mastermind Team – This has worked for thousands of
years. It still does. Find a core group of people to work with and
bounce ideas, trade tips on what is working for each person.

4. Support A Weekly Meeting – Bring your business to the world.
Meet people and build relationships. (Don’t just throw out your
business card!) This meeting can begin with just 2 people. Invite
someone to lunch and connect. You will see 10 times the success
of recruiting locally over using the internet alone.

5. Daily Personal Growth – Read for 15-30 minutes per day.
Leaders are readers. Countless studies have shown that one
of the main differences between highly successful people and
average people is how much they read.

6. Study Marketing – Don’t overwhelm yourself. Make regular time
to study. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Learn to eventually generate
at least 10-20 leads per day. Study the leaders in marketing.

7. Attend The Big Events – There may be 2 or 3 per year. One of
the secrets of the top earners is they make events and bring their
team.

8. Get Connected – This is a team sport. Connect with your upline,
your sponsor, your company, and your personal team. Reach out.
Be on the weekly team training, presentations, and chat groups.

9. Support The Team – Be available to anyone in any way that you
can. It doesn’t matter if they are on your team or not. We, as a
company, are a team. Let’s ROCK this together.

10. Be Here In A Year
Everyone who is here in a year and follows these commitments
will have a dramatic transformation in their lives. All that is
required is that you follow the commitments and have your team do the same.

**************************************

This is a summary of a longer training. If any of these seem ridiculous, off the wall, crazy, or just plain stupid to you,,, feel free to contact me and we can talk in further detail.

Be creative and think outside the box!

"Trying" Network Marketing is guaranteed failure and the big guys will eat you up. A professional manner makes all the difference.

This is for all the “part timers” in Network Marketing that are out there.

I’m not talking about the ones that work part time in the sense that they only have a few part time hours to devote to their business. This isn’t for the marketers that are working every moment they can spare around their current job and situations.

I commend those of you who are starting out and rearranging your job and family schedule to work on your business.

This message is for the part timers that are only partly involved in their business.

Those that are just going to “try” Network Marketing.

And those that haven’t proclaimed their profession as a Network Marketer.

For those of you that are in this category, you are going to fail.

Because those that have taken ownership and are DOING instead of “trying”,,, are going to walk all over you.

They’re going to eat you up for breakfast and pick you out of their teeth before lunch.

Here’s a story to illustrate: One of my friends and teammates in Network Marketing told me how he calls other marketers that he comes across with their phone number listed on their website. He does this just to begin a dialogue and open up a relationship.

(Now that’s a sign of a professional marketer, picking up the phone!)

He called this fellow marketer and the response he received was more than disappointing.

First, he asked if it was a good time for them to talk.

They responded with “What do YOU want”.

Second, he asked to talk about the info on her website.

They responded with “What website?”

This only sounds like an exaggeration. 90% of the marketers I call are shocked to get a call from someone they don’t know and all of them are confused about how I got their phone number or other form of contact information.

Those are the “part timers”. I can pick them as soon as they answer the phone.
When I call another marketer and they answer like a terrified 6 year old with a meek “hello?” I know they are a “part timer”.

Is that how a business owner answers the phone?

In the age of caller ID most of us know if the call we are receiving is from someone we already know or not. I never answer the phone casually if it the call is from a business partner, a prospect, or someone I don’t know.

But then again, I’m not a “part timer”.

Are you?

6 years working in automotive dealership management and I know a couple things about closing a sale. Each newbie on the sales floor was given a booklet of 100 closing scenarios on their first day. They were expected to learn and memorize 5 new ones each week. If that sounds cold and impersonal, it was.

I left the automotive industry for the network marketing industry. Which is still an industry based on sales and both with a fairly negative perception from those on the outside looking in.

I didn’t want to bring the negative attitude of closing a sale with me into network marketing. I’ve also never cared for the acronym ABC (Always Be Closing). So I was grateful when I came across an alternative to this phrase. Always Be Confirming.

Closing is cold and negative and feels like an ending. Like you shut somebody out. Quite often when a seller gets their money at a closing it really is the end. It’s the end of the communication. It’s the end of receiving the sweet talking.

It should be the beginning, especially in network marketing. This is where the relationship begins and the true communication and growing in a business relationship starts. In network marketing our prospects are not sales that are to be closed. A prospect is potential part of your team. Teams communicate and collaborate and mentor each other.

So stop trying to “close the sale”. The alternative I have found is “confirm the partnership”.

ABC has taken on a new meaning for me. I’ve left “closing” to the car sales folk. This is an industry of relationships and I commit myself to building and confirming relationships.

ABC = Always Be Confirming

Synonyms:
Closing = shut, end, terminate, fold, shut down, finish, stop, cease

Confirm = corroborate, support, affirm, reassure, approve, covenant

Changing one word can change your entire outlook and approach and revolutionize your MLM business.

Here’s to OUR Success,
